We always need volunteers to walk dogs, clean kennels, collect donations, carry out gardening and maintenance tasks, help at events - the list is endless!!
Our Senior Volunteers are a very dedicated and friendly team with their focus being the welfare of the dogs. It would be fair to say they are the backbone of Islay Dog Rescue.
We have a team of Senior Volunteers who are responsible for running the kennels on a daily basis and supervising/supporting less experienced volunteers.
It may surprise you that not all of our volunteers are particularly “doggy” or fit/active – there is an important role for everybody. Please don’t underestimate the value of sitting on a couch at the log burner with a dog next to you. What a wonderful “home like “ experience for that dog and you get to drink coffee and read a book – win/win!
Volunteering opportunities include
- Caring for our resident dogs – cleaning kennels, doing laundry, general cleaning
- Exercising the dogs, playing with them and enrichment times (sometimes that means sitting at the log burner, drinking coffee with a dog on the couch next to you!)
- Training and grooming.
- Stock rotation/control
- Maintenance of our buildings and fences.
- Gardening
- Fundraising
What will you get out of it?
- Personal health and wellbeing
- Fresh air, improvements in physical and mental health
- Belonging to part of a team, making new friends
- Localised training
- Being part of a dogs journey
- A sense of fulfilment
- Interactions with dogs of all shapes and sizes
- The satisfaction of giving something back
- Tons of cake and gallons of coffee!
