Advice for training your dog.
Why should I train my dog?
- The reasons for educating your dog are no different than educating your child as he/she grows. If left to their own devices both children and dogs develop bad habits and they become unpleasant to be around.
- A dog which has had basic training is a pleasure as they learn to be well-behaved, obedient and safe.
- Whilst it is true that some breeds of dogs are more easily trained than others ALL dogs are capable of a decent level of basic obedience.
- A bit of work and effort for six months can give you a dog which is a pleasure for life.
- Training can also help prevent problem behaviours like barking, biting and making each walk a nightmare!! It can also be great fun and a rewarding experience for both you and your dog not to mention creating a strong bond. Surely that’s got to be worth it?
Top training tips
- Minimise distractions - always start lessons for new tricks in a quiet room in your house away from any distractions
- Break training up into short but regular sessions so your dog isn't overwhelmed
- Be patient - just like us, dogs all learn at different rates so don't worry if your dog doesn't pick things up straight away
- Always end with something your dog knows, so the session finishes positively

What do I teach my dog?
- At Islay Dog Rescue we don’t like the word “command” so we use “request” instead.
- There are eight basic requests that all dogs should know. They are sit, down, stay, recall, off, leave, watch me and heel (lead training).
- All training should be reward based. Giving your dog something they really like - such as food, toys or praise - when they show a particular behaviour reinforces this behaviour. Therefore the likelihood of it being repeated when requested is high.
