Advice for when there is other pets in the home.
- Let the dogs decide: Pay attention to how the dogs are behaving and let them set the pace. Don't force interactions if either dog seems uncomfortable.
- Introduce on neutral territory: Introduce the dogs in a neutral location, like a park, so your other dogs don't feel dominant in their own territory.
- Keep interactions short: Keep the first introductions short and frequent.
- Provide space: Give each dog their own space, but allow them to see each other from a distance.
- Feed separately: Keep the dogs' living and eating spaces separate so they feel a sense of ownership.
- Restrict toys and treats. Do not feed the dogs treats together and remove toys to prevent any resource guarding behaviour. Reintroduce when the dogs are settled and comfortable together.
- Reward good behaviour: When your dog accepts the new dog, praise and gently stroke them.
- Don't leave dogs alone: Don't leave the dogs alone together or allow children to make introductions.
