Giving up your Dog

Advice for giving up your dog.

Giving up your Dog

Making the decision to find a new home for your dog is never easy, even though you know it might be the best option for you and them. Circumstances change, and now the cost of living is forcing families to part with their pets too.

At the moment there is a national crisis within rescue with most organisations full to bursting point.  Relinquishments (giving up your dog) are at an all time high with adoptions being at an all time low.

There are many reasons you may wish to give up your dog but we urge you to do the following.  If it’s a training or behaviour issue then look in our Advice Section, research how you can help your dog via positive training methods on the internet.  Unfortunately professional dog trainers and behaviourists can be expensive so are not within everybody’s grasp.  Research positive dog training methods, look on You Tube – you will be amazed at what you find.

Remember though, training times time, dedication, repetition and patience.  Rome wasn’t built in a day!!

The cost of living crisis has hit everybody hard and a lot of people are finding it difficult to feed their dogs.  We have a contingency available to help people who need this but we cannot deliver the food to you.  If you need some help please complete our Contact Us from and we will be in touch.

After this, if you feel you have no choice but to relinquish your dog to rescue then please complete the relinquishment form.

What happens next?

A  member of the team will contact you to discuss your situation.  Please remember that we may not have space therefore will be unable to take your dog regardless of the situation at that time.

The IDR volunteer will discuss ways you can try to solve the problem yourself or they may suggest a different area for you to investigate (such as breed specific rescues).  Whilst Islay Dog Rescue value very breed of dog equally it is usually the case that breed specific rescues will only help dogs of their chosen breed.  Therefore, they may have a space

If we think we may be able to help we will arrange a date for you to bring your dog for an assessment visit.  During this visit we will decide if we are the most suitable rescue for your dog to come to.  If we feel we cannot help your dog then we will give you advice on other contacts you could approach.

Please also be aware that we have a £250 hand in fee for most dogs who come into rescue with us.
