Crate Training

Advice for crate training your dog.

Crate Training
  • Make the crate a safe and happy space:  Put the crate in a room where you spend a lot of time and leave the door open so your dog can explore. You can also make the crate more den-like by covering it with a sheet and playing background noise.
  • Associate the crate with positive things: Use treats, toys, or other positive objects to lure your dog into the crate. You can also feed your dog in the crate or use remote feeding devices so they don't have to leave.
  • Gradually increase the amount of time your dog spends in the crate: Start by closing the door for a moment and then reopening it. Gradually increase the amount of time you leave the door closed while staying outside the crate.
  • Leave your dog alone in the crate: Once your dog is comfortable being in the crate for 30–60 minutes, you can gradually work up to leaving them alone.
  • Be patient: Crate training can take several days to several weeks, depending on your dog's age, temperament, and previous experiences.
  • Don't use the crate for punishment: Never punish your dog by placing them in the crate.
