My name is Gary and I have been volunteering at Islay Dog Rescue for several months now.
I started after my own dog passed away. MacTavish and I were very close and for the last few months of his life his back legs were very weak and although he was in good spirits and happy he couldn't walk very far. So I got a wheelbarrow and pushed him around in that - he became quite famous and was even featured in the newspaper. When I'm at Islay Dog Rescue I do whatever is needing done. Sometimes I walk the dogs but I help with the kennel cleaning in the morning, light the fires in the Groom Room and Enrichment Room and do the laundry. In the summer I love working on the garden and keeping it as neat and tidy as I can. Though there are lots of garden areas so some other keen gardeners would be a help!
I have also fostered three dogs so far. They are Tess (an older border collie cross), Eddie (a terrier cross) and Jake (a shih tzu cross). Both Eddie and Jake came with me on bothy weekends and had a great time. They have all left for new homes and now and although I miss them I feel good that I have been part of their journey.
If you want to do something good then come here.
