SPONSOR DOGS

Sadly, some of the dogs we have taken into rescue cannot be rehomed.  This can be for a variety of reasons - they may have behavioural issues or medical problems.  At the moment we have several dogs who fulfill that criteria and are currently unable to be rehomed elsewhere.

It may be that, through time, these dogs can be rehomed but until that day we can offer you the chance to become a doggie sponsor!!

Many people have approached us to sponsor dogs as they would like to be able to show their support for the rescue on a regular basis.

So, how does our sponsorship work and what does the package entail?

For only £1 per week (£4.34 per month) you can sponsor any of the featured dogs below. In exchange for this sponsorship you will receive the following :-

A personalised poster of your dog
4 newsletters each year - from your dog!
A Birthday card from your dog
A Christmas card from your dog
A Valentines card from your dog
A free pass to one of our "Friday night Fund-raisers" for two people
A car sticker

If you would like to sponsor any of the dogs below please email Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will arrange it for you.

HARLEY

Harley came to Islay Dog Rescue (Ayrshire) in October 2011.  He had been found as a stray in Lancashire and ended up in the dog pound.  After serving his seven days - and having not been claimed by his owners - he was on the put to sleep list.  When he first came here he was not great with other dogs.  A few people looked at him but were put off by the fact that he was 8 years old.  That's a real shame as he is a very fit and active little guy.  We thought he had landed on his feet when he was adopted by a lady in Ardrossan.  However, her neighbour had cats and it transpired that Harley is not a great cat fan!!  Harley lives with Grace and her other dog, Holly.  He gets on very well with Holly but is not great when meeting other dogs.

Age : 10 years
Likes : balls (oh yes!!), chew bones, walks in the forest
Dislikes : cats :-(
Difficulties : other dogs
Is it possible to meet Harley? : yes but would need to be organised in advance via Lorraine at Islay Dog Rescue (Ayrshire)

If you would like to sponsor Harley please email Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will arrange it for you.

 FRANKIE

Frankie came to rescue on 22 October 2012.  He was abandoned in London and found himself in the dog pound with only 7 days grace!!  He was not reclaimed and was rescued by a sister organisation.  He lived in foster care for a while but during his stay he proved to be more than a little problematic.  Frankie is not good with people - well........that may be a little understatement.  He was assessed by two behaviourists in London who recommended he be put to sleep.  Our sister organisation asked if we would be willing to give him a try so we did.  Well.....where do we begin.  He arrived here and immediately fell in love with Richard.  His first introduction to Lorraine involved a severely chewed finger and a word Richard had never heard before!  By Christmas 2012 he had accepted Lorraine and would allow her to touch him - now he adores her and she him.  During a TV drama one evening Frankie became very distressed when the actress was screaming and it is very obvious that he has suffered abuse in the past.  His tail is partially paralysed, he has suffered trachial damage (leaving him with a throaty bark) and spinal damage.  He has a weak chest and gave everybody a fright in January 2013 when he developed pneumonia.  Our vet, Kirstin at Companion Care, saw him straight away and saved the day. Phew!!

Age : Unknown (middle aged)
Likes : stuffed kong, playing with a ball, running around the exercise arena
Dislikes : most people (probably all people to be honest), chickens
Difficulties : not good with people other than Lorraine (though Richard will do if Lorraine is not around!)
Is it possible to meet Frankie? : only if you have a death wish - best viewed from a distance!

If you would like to sponsor Frankie please email Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will arrange it for you.

TESS

Tess came to rescue, along with her friend Charlie, at the beginning of 2013.  Unfortunately their owners had to move into sheltered accommodation and were not permitted by the local authority to take their dogs with them (shame on them!!)  Tess is almost 14 years old and in her twilight years.  She is "lumpy and bumpy", has shaky legs, cataracts and on some days she appears a little confused.  However, despite that, she is a wonderful, loving dog who adores Richard.  Although Charlie has found a fantastic new home, Tess will live her days out at Glen Islay.  She is very fond of her food and loves to potter around the garden.  Outwith these two activities she spends most of her time sleeping - aahh bless.

Age : 14 years
Likes : food, treats, wandering around the garden, sleeping behind the couch
Dislikes : other dogs trying to steal her food!
Difficulties : occasionally a little confused but we don't care!
Is it possible to visit Tess? : yes but would need to be organised in advance via Lorraine at Islay Dog Rescue.

If you would like to sponsor Tess please email Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will arrange it for you.

Frequently Asked Questions :-

1. How is my money used?

Your money not only helps pay for food for the dog but also goes towards veterinary bills, training and any equipment (bedding, collar, lead, etc) that the dog may need.  It is also used for the daily running of the rescue, this includes items such as insurance and transport costs.

2. Can I visit my dog?
It depends on the dog!!  One or two of the dogs are particularly unsociable therefore cannot be visited.  However, others are very sociable and would love to meet their sponsor.  We must respectfully ask that this is strictly by appointment only.

3.  Will I be the only person to sponsor the dog?
This is a new venture to us so we have no idea how many people would wish to be sponsors.  In an ideal world, each dog would have several sponsors (rather like a large family).

4.  Can I sponsor a dog for somebody else?
This is a fabulous idea - after all, what do you gift the person who has everything?

5. How can I register to sponsor a dog?
If you are interested in sponsoring a dog we would ask that you email us regarding this and we will contact you.  Our email address is islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk.

6. How can I pay for sponsoring a dog?
Payment can be made via paypal, standing order, cheque, cash or postal order.  The simplest method of payment is by standing order.  If you would like to set this up please email Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will organise this for you.

If you have any further questions please do not hesitate to contact us on 01290 424192 or 0787 656 1545.

SUPPORTERS

Our supporters are wonderful people who help us in many ways.

Those who choose to adopt a rescue dog rather than buy a puppy.

Several volunteer, either as foster carers or as dog walkers. Both these positions are very important to us as they allow us to help and to assess more dogs than we could otherwise.  Others help by covering transport runs, moving dogs from one place to the other, taking a dog to the vet for us, etc.

Others support our efforts through Facebook by sharing pictures and posts and helping us to reach more potential homes - as well as take part in our continual on-line auction.

Other supporters attend our fund-raising events (for more details see the Forthcoming Events page).

DONATIONS

We have also been approached by people asking if they can donate to the rescue to help with funding. We are extremely grateful for any donations (financial or otherwise) we receive and financial donations can be made via the following means :-

Paypal to islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk
Direct to our bank account : Lloyds TSB, Branch Code 87 37 74, Account Number 77347560
By standing order : please contact Lorraine at islaydogrescue@yahoo.co.uk and she will arrange it

Direct to our vets :
Companion Care, Ayr, Tel 01292 430530
(this can be done over the telephone)

Donations of all sorts of items are always welcome. They can take the form of dog food, raffle prizes, bingo prizes, cleaning equipment such as deck scrubbers, disinfectant, plastic dog beds, soap powder, dog beds, cages, etc. etc.

NB : People often ask what sort of thing makes up a raffle or bingo prize - you would be surprised!!  We have had donations of hand-knitted items such as scarves, cardigans and bags, some people have made up small food hampers, costume jewellery, hand-made craft items, jars of sweeties (I often sterilise my old coffee jars and fill them with sweeties), toiletries, home baking, gift sets - two of our more unusual prizes were peg bags (including pegs) and a gift back containing two tea-towels, sponges and some washing up liquid!!  The list is endless but we are grateful for all we receive.

We cannot begin to thank you all enough for your support.  Not only are you restoring our faith in human nature but you are directly responsible for helping us save dogs' lives.
